That's a LOT of desoldering!   Hence my "heroic" comment. I'd be
tempted to use a dremel tool to cut the leads where they enter the
chip, then clip them off and just desolder the ones where wires go.  I
have a desoldering iron with a hollow tip and suction bulb that would
be my weapon of choice for this sort of desoldering. (Radio Shack
tool)

It's an interesting challenge, but more of a winter thing. Too many
other fun things to do this time of year....  I don't think Bill
Garber has to worry much about this affecting sales of his memory
card!  ;-))
