Built-in obsolescense? I don't think Apple engineers imagined anyone needing
more than 4MB of RAM... why, that would make it more expandable than a
Macintosh of the same era.

Realistically, not many people do. People want 8MB because it's been done, and
they want to max out the machine. Aside from a whopper-sized RAM disk, what
programs from the era *require* more than 2MB of RAM to load and work with
data?

I'm not knocking people who want 8MB ... but after using Sirius cards for a few
years, I pulled them out to save the save the power for my accelerator.
