Don't you hate it when your spare system develops the same symptoms as your primary system. ;-)
Yes!! And you know how I am about redundancy... ;-)
Well, the good news is that when you've fixed one, you've probably fixed
the other, too. ;-)
The analog board consumes a lot of power, so I'm wondering if the
Mac can be operated without the analog board being powered--or vice
versa--at least enough to verify whether the power supply can power
one or the other (but not both)... My first objective would be to
try to localize the problem.
The Mac Plus analog board contains the power supply, video +
horizontal + vertical circuits all one one board.
There may still be some simple way of disconnecting the horizontal
output stage, for example, which will be responsible for most of the
power consumption...
Is the system at all responsive in other ways? For example, does
its speaker make any sounds? Do any LEDs light?
Both machines are actually working fine.. except for this odd ticking
sound.
Ahhh... That's very interesting--and much simpler to diagnose!
I'll see if I can't use a stethoscope with the metal end piece off to
find what's ticking. If I show up in the news as having my house
exploded, we'll know it was a successful assassination attempt.
Perfect--finding out exactly what's ticking is clearly the next step.
Since you suggested sparking, you might also try careful visual
examination with the case off in a darkened room.
