One other thing to try is to "dd" the data into "image.po" and see if you
can mess with that.  If so, you can access the data by copying it off and
back on en masse, which is inconvenient but perhaps better than nothing.

% dd if=/dev/whatever of=/tmp/image.po bs=512

should do it.

If I want to do a quick check of an image file I run the Linux version of
"mdc" on it to get a file listing.
