Round here, we primarily use the HTPC to timeshift current affairs,
documentaries, etc off the public television stations. Something I
have no ethical dilemma with whatsoever since I'm funding it :)

Hopefully this holiday period I will finally be able to finish

Ouch! Mate, I know how you feel, but seriously, try to accept the
reality of Sturgeon's Law: 90% of everything (including books!) is
crap. As free thinkers we can separate the wheat from the chaff.

If you boycott communications mediums, you risk becoming the very
prisoner you seem to be trying to free :-)
