Sorry... but this sounds like a big whine. "No one wants to pay me
what my collectibles are worth."
It's you hobbyist collectors that are killing the hobby. No one can
get in and see what the nostalgia was all about. You can't put
together a working system cause some fanboi has stocked it all away in
attic/basement/closet and wants you to pay and extra digit in front of
the decimal point for the privilege of having it finally break in your
hands. That means people like me will eventually LEAVE the hobby, and
you're going to be left with the 5 to 6 of you who have collected
everything trying to rip each other off. Eventually you'll die and
there will be NO ONE LEFT who knows or cares what these "Commodore's"
were.
I've seen CMD HD's and RAMlinks go for more than entire modern PC
systems. I'm wondering what kind of moron pays that much for something
that can't be fixed.
Maurice STILL has my RAMlink that I sent him in 2004. I'm NEVER
getting that back, so what's the point?
Hell... Maurice was the ultimate Commodore "Collector/Hobbyist". He
'Collected" CMD and killed it. You should worship him. Now your 40MB
Hard drive will be worth more than a New Mac Tower, as long as it
runs.
As far as supporting the community, Maurice was a nail in the coffin.
Any hope that we might be able to keep our stuff running died when he
buried CMD in his private collection.
I've been looking for a 1750 for about 4 years now. Without one...
it's just not worth my actually keeping my Commodore collection
usable.
The MAX I intend to go for a 1750, or expanded 1764 is $75.
512K for $75 is ridiculous. I can get 4GB flash drive for that now.
My collection is shelf junk, and very soon, I will be getting rid of
what doesn't hold any real value for me. THE INSIDES!!!!
I can't even find reliable 5.25" floppies any more, so what good are
my 1571's? They make great MiniITX project boxes... that's what.
Same for my old Commodore 64's and 128's. I'll make a bunch of core2
duo system in old Commodore cases and hide my PC hobby in nostalgia
plastic.
You've "collected" me out of the hobby keeping a working C= and
eventually it's going to get about 7 vintage machines shelled and
tossed.
Any one want SX-64 innards? I bought a semi busted one to turn into my
LAN box. Make me an offer, and pay shipping.
You guys wanna horde like dragons, you're going to face the same end.
Extinction. Your "horde" will be buried or pilfered in the end.
Supporting your hobby doesn't just mean buying it all up. It means
keeping it alive and letting people get the Commodore Experience.
When you untighten your grip, you may get some new blood. Otherwise,
you'll have the honor of the owning the last C= and people will laugh
at you cause their cell phone has better graphics.
