Easily programmable... like the apple II?  :-)

Your dream is a reality.  learn VHDL or verilog, and join the apple II
FPGA project.

RWIII RAM is emulated
ROM's are loaded from a "file" that can be changed

I've got mine hooked to 640 X 480 backlit color LCD,
FOLDABLE keyboard...

still working on storage device.

wifi:  I don't want it.

USB:  Alex Freed got USB working on his.  There are drivers to talk to
USB key's from 6502..  doesn't seem like it would be very hard to make
a driver to talk
to USB-IDE cables.
