I sure hope that Glenn Jones pop's on to fill me in.

I'm here :)

Not having a MAC addy on the card goes against the book
completly...never seen it in my life...but this may be a first..

It is true most vendors of Ethernet cards have burned in MAC Addresses and most Ethernet drivers allow for a Locally Administered Address (LAA)(over ride).

The CS8900a has no facility to remember a MAC address, it has to be programmed by something each time it is powered on. In the modules 16 bit mode an external serial prom is supported to hold a MAC address but that is not an option for us 8-bit folks.

Oliver set the MAC address in Contiki as that was the first app to use the Uthernet card. When Ewen and I worked on the Marinetti Link Layer for the Uthernet card, we opt'd to keep it the same.

As long as it is unique on your LAN it should not pose a problem ... in your case knowing what you should put in the MAC inclusion list on your router is important. Others have provided ways of determining the MAC address of any LAN device, if you don't have access to that info from the vendor. Turning off your MAC filter momentarily and issuing a DHCP request would have been my suggestion.

Hope this helps....

Glenn
