Interesting.  Well, how this all came about is Michael and I are
trying to figure out why I'm seeing the RGB vid signal going to zero
between pixels in the 640 mode only.  All other modes are
continuous.   Due to limitations of my scope, I've not yet been able
to analyze the duration and consistency of these zero-goings.
Maybe what you've written here is a clue.  The zero spaces might be
some kind of correction?
