I cut my teeth on the 545A! I *love* that boatanchor. ;-)
It was my first experience with delayed sweep triggering, and I couldn't
live without it since. In fact, the precision triggering of Tektronix
scopes was the usability feature that made them the reference design.
Their ridiculously Mil-spec manufacturing methods made them immortal--
ceramic "terminal strips" with silver-fired contacts for mounting all
components--wow! ;-)
Now I use a 465 (solid state + CRT) that has all the features of the
545 at a fraction of the weight, power, and noise. You can generally
find them on eBay in the $100-$200 range, and, if you're lucky, you
can get the manuals, too.
I've used digital scopes (as well as almost every other variation),
but I still like the analog display--though digital simulation of
the analog phosphor response is getting pretty good. ;-)
