They dropped it because it was too much trouble to keep all those colors 
right all the time.  Either you go with spot Pantone (extra cost, and 
you can't use it for magazine ads) or you go with process color and deal 
with the inevitable lack of color accuracy, and possibly ugly halftone 
dots.

It's much easier to keep the shape and go with a single color that can 
be any color you want.  It's usually gray, but when they had their old 
multi-building campus in NE Austin, I recall that each building's sign 
had a different colored apple on it.
