Thanks. I think a large part of my confusion is not knowing how
DOS.Master actually sets itself up on the computer with virtual
partitions. Another issue is that i'm not using the GS-version of
Shrinkit (which i think uses a different compression codec). I tried
the open-apple-S trick. no dice. Shrinkit says the file is "not a
recognized format" or some such.

I've never had problem with 8-bit ShrinkIt as long as the files
being dealt with are not forked files.

DOS.Master allocates a contiguous series of blocks without creating a
file. (Be careful with ProSel utilities like "Mr. Fixit".) It's probably
best to play with different configurations on an 800K floppy before
settling on what you want to do.

You can find some 800K disk images with multiple 140K DOS volumes here:

GS/ShrinkIt can handle anything created by the P8 versions. The reverse
is true for later versions of P8 ShrinkIt.

Sounds like the archives were damaged somehow.

Or the file has a resource fork...

Use UNFORKIT on the Apple II to remove the fork before trying to
open it with ShrinkIt. ProDOS apps don't know what to do with forked
files.
