DOS.Master allocates a contiguous series of blocks without creating a
file. (Be careful with ProSel utilities like "Mr. Fixit".) It's probably
best to play with different configurations on an 800K floppy before
settling on what you want to do.

GS/ShrinkIt can handle anything created by the P8 versions. The reverse
is true for later versions of P8 ShrinkIt.
Sounds like the archives were damaged somehow.
