The IIgs batteries are rated at 3.6 volts. So you would probably
require 3 AA batteries (1.5 volts each).

Did you check that the polarity of the new batteries was correct - ie.
that the wires from your new battery series are connected to the
correct + and - terminals on the motherboard? The +ve terminal is at
the rear of the board and the -ve is towards the front.

When I replaced mine, I snipped off the old battery, bought a new 1/2
AA size 3.6V battery with leads and soldered it onto the existing
terminals.
