I've had a peculiar problem with my 1.44 AEHD as well.  800k disks
which are formatted and written to by it are problematic in Apple 800k
drives, but fine in the AEHD.  I don't know if these 2 issues are
related or not, but wanted to give you a heads up.  It could be a drive
speed issue with my specific AEHD.
