I don't think its that bizarre:

Most people in their teens got their Apple from their parents for
"homework" (but of course most of them played mostly ;-) - and the
"schooldays" were the best times for many and reason enough for
nostalgic feelings.

Others in that age simply couldn't afford an Apple at the time and are
curious enough to discover the whole Apple II world. The GS for example
was hellishly overpriced in Germany compared to the Amiga and Atari ST
- guess which machines were bought in a country where Apple II
compatibility was virtually nonimportant.

And then there is the retro trend which grabs many younger technically
inclined people which may have never really lived the 8-bit days.

are a more specialized pack: Highly skilled technical persons like
engineers or mathematicians who liked the idea to have their *own*
computer at home (which differed a lot from their hardware at the job).
