It's not that bizarre.  They were the most popular computers in schools in
the '80s, so there are a bunch of people around my age (mid-30s now) who
used them quite a bit in the classroom.

(DoDDS, OTOH, had mostly standardized on Atari 8-bit machines for some weird
reason, so most of their schools were loaded up with 800s, 800XLs, and such. 
The counselor at Croughton Middle School had a IIe in her office on which
Lode Runner was fairly popular, and the AFJROTC squadron at Kaiserslautern
High School had its own German-spec (!) IIe.  Starting in early 1987 or so,
a handful of IIGSes started popping up in some classrooms at K-Town.  I got
a fair bit of use out of the machine in the electronics lab.)
