Just to add to what others have already mentioned, Lawrence Hall of Science had a disk of DOS 3.3 recovery tools. I believe the title was 'Lawrence Hall of Science Utilies' or something similar.

It had a utility could reconstruct the VTOC on a mangled disk that saved my data a couple of times. I always ran it on Disk Muncher copies of the affected disk. It seemed to work pretty well.
