Long ago I wrote a few BASIC/machine language programs to help with
that sort of thing. I called the most developed one TRAX (not knowing
that a similar name was in use at the time!)

It isn't automatic but might help in recovering data and rebuilding a
catalog track (which I did do once.. only once!) Look in the DOS
UTILITIES portion to find all the track/sector lists pointing to files.
