I'm doing this at present (Using a Xilinx Spartan II FPGA). Although I
only intend to provide a replacement for the Apple II motherboard (plus
various improvements).
Getting around the ROM issue is easy - provide a socket for a ROM.
Alternatively, those without a real machine to 'upgrade' may simply
modify the FPGA code to include the ROM within the machine description.
Note: This is not a vapourware product announcement. First I'll get it
done, then I'll consider the costs involved in producing an actual
product.
