I think I tried both - I have the option of configuring the Linux host at 
will.  I'd prefer to go scripted - either PPP or SLIP since I can then 
keep the shell prompt for ProTERM as needed.

Right now I've been trying SLIP.  I'm setting the speed to 57600, and a 
couple of CR's, but no login prompt is seen, I guess.  (Same thing works 
fine from ProTERM.)

I'll look - but I'm not certain that's actually my problem.  It's 
something stupid with the connection.  The script never gets past my 
login prompt, so I'm not even to the point of starting SLIP or PPP!  Do I 
need to do anything other than (IIRC) "speed 57600" or "baud 57600" to 
set the port?  I then do 2 CR's (also tried 1) and then wait for "ogin:".

Done.  I'm just missing something.  :-/
