Not that long when it is working, but sounds like it is not.
Are you using the PPP link layer or Scripted PPP?
If you are using Scripted PPP, have you read and understood the SLIP
and PPP link layer documentation? (in the documentation folder) This is
useful for understanding the scripting language.
Are you using Marinetti 3.0b1?
There are some articles in Juiced.GS that may help with configuration
The January 2000 issue contains an article by Tony Ward that is a
primer.
A later issue (someone else may know the issue) included a step by step
from Geoff Weiss on how to connect Marinetti to a Linux box.

Marinetti does not support compression (i.e. C-SLIP), so don't try
that.
Make sure your baud rate is set correctly in the script and try sending
a CR to sync with the other side.

You get to use the TCP/IP based apps that have been developed - which
are more flexible than plain vanilla telecomms.
