Well, the spirit of apple // hacking, AFAIK, is that you have a very
open system that offers endless hardware/software hacking with
little/no restriction. However the hardware hacking is mostly the sort
of stuff done by making custom I/O cards with breadboards or whatever.

If/when I get around to my next //e mod, I will just use a standard
drill to make some holes in the bottom metal plate of the case so that
I can mount a hard drive and new power supply in there.

Another mod I did invoved taking off one of the smaller back cover
panels and fitted a headphone jack in it, connected to my mockingboard.
That used a regular drill and a dremel just to clean it up a little
bit for the hole and some solder to attach the headphone jack to the
wire attached to the mockingboard (hint, you can use the same type of
wire used to connect a cd-rom drive to a sound card in a pc for this).
So as far as a //e, a drill, a soldering iron -- and maybe a dremel
with a standard assortment of cutoff wheels and other bits to clean up
jagged edges.

I think the most extreme apple // case mod I've ever seen is MJ Mahon's
"AppleCrate" project. Give that a look some time. ;-)
