late model 2e power supply failure

I have posted first a question and then a fix report about my power supply
in the
late model 2e. Before I had fixed it I ordered a replacement power supply
pc-board
from http://www.gse-reactive.com/.
They make new power supplies and give away the old ones for the price of
shipping.
You may recall that the problem with my ps proved to be a small electrolitic
cap - 1uF x 35v.
And I have spotted it by observing minor board corrosion due to leaked
electrolite.

Somewhat to my surprise the replacement board happened to be the exact same
model as
the one I've fixed. Even more surprisingly the replacement board also has
evidence of the SAME
cap leaking. I didn't power it up as my fix holds quite well, but I would
not be surprised if it
also doesn't hold +5V.

The reason I'm posting this is that apparently power supplies from 2e
computers built in 199x often
have this problem. So if yours is not quite stable, measure the +5 volts. If
it is less than that, try
replacing the 1uF 35V cap located near the transformer.

It is not surprising that an electrolitic cap fails after 13 years. It
happens quite often. I find it more
interesting that the power supply (and everything else) in my old Apple ][
works just like it did
when it was born in 1979! That is 27 years!
