Indeed - the issue is whether or not the region is fooled with by any
firmware or operating system code. In theory at least, the 80-column
firmware doesn't mess with it, as it should work ok with just a 1k AUX
card installed.

The area is flagged as reserved by the Operating System in any
documentation I've got, but I'm unsure of exactly what, if anything
used it.

One possibility is the /RAM driver, but I'm unconcerned by this as it's
easily disabled.
