I actually used to have a nice Apple II diags program years ago. For the
life of me I can't remember the name though. I do have some diag disk now,
but no image of it. I can make one and through it up on Web Server if you
want.

Master Diagnostics was a popular one... I remember it having fairly
extensive testing for disk drives and memory...

A library of card identifier code would be a good thing to start,
though. Combined with David's CPU identifier routines, plus model
identification code, it'd be really handy.

Beep codes sound a little old-school for me... how about somebody
adapting a phoneme set to Michaels DAC522 and having the machine speak
back it's configuration?

:-)

Good point--though it might get a little cryptic to keep the
sampled sounds small. ;-) I realize you were suggesting a
phoneme-based synthesizer, which hasn't been done with DAC522.

However, the software version of S.A.M. is phoneme-based, and
would be a great starting point.
