That shouldn't be a problem on older controllers, as 16-bit drivesneeded to assert IOCS16# to do 16-bit transfers for PIO transfers. Notethat DMA was *always* 16-bit. So you'd have to make sure DMA wasdisabled as well if the drive is 8-bit only (probably wouldn't advertiseDMA modes anyway?!?)


Note that IOCS16# has been deprecated in later ATA specs.
