Yes, I've often wondered about NIB systems...

When I was little, my father told me that watermelons were white inside
until they were cut open and exposed to light. (!)  I thought long and
hard about how to prove or falsify this theory, and learned a lot about
epistemology in the process--as I'm sure was his intent.

I note that NIB systems have some of the same properties.  How do you
know what's in the box without destroying its value?  (A bit like a
fine old wine, eh?)

(Some will propose X rays, but that leaves functionality still
unknown...)
