I can't think of any other way that the game would have been able to send its sound to the cassette port ... it certainly can't detect whether a cable is plugged in or not. It had to be built that way.

Yep--several games did that, for exactly the reason the OP used it.
It was the easiest way to get the game sound out of a bigger speaker.
