Ironically that's a pretty superficial analysis. Almost every Mac user I
know (and I know a lot) is concerned primarily with ease-of-use and
reliability, both of which relate directly to function.
The idea that Macs are a status symbol is probably more a reflection of
Apple's marketing skills than reality. Of all the "well-to-do" people I
know, not a single one of them own a Mac.

Lack of software? You must be joking.
Anyway... (trying to steer things back on topic) I recall reading a while
back how the case design for the Apple II was chosen for its
"business-like" appearance which is fairly significant at a time when most
other home computers looked like props from Battlestar Galactica...
