Most lawyers would disagree with you.  The GPL is a "viral" license that
applies to all derived code, and the consensus is that static or dynamic
linking to GPL code constitutes derivation.

The LGPL is more reasonable.  The GNU version of libc is LGPL, which is
why it's possible to ship commercial software under Linux without
providing a custom version of the standard C libraries.

If you want your sources and everything associated with them to be
free -- one of the major tenets of the FSF -- then the GPL is the right
choice.  If you want your code to be adopted more widely, then choose
a different license (LGPL, Mozilla's MPL, Apache's ASF2, or good old
fashioned BSD).
