Re: DuoDisk - Three Questions

I am nervous about opening up the drive for refurbishment. My
adventure trying to replace the drive belt of the Famicom Disk System's
disk drive was a minor nightmare in itself. I may have twisted a gear
shaft within the drive, but as I have none of the special disks I don't
know for sure.

As for the Duo Disk, I am fortunate in that there are fewer moving
parts in 5.25" drive assembly. However, once I open the drive, I may
find belts looking clearly in need of replacement. Where will I be
able to find a replacement?

Fear not. The drive mechanisms are very simple and durable. Just
try to avoid getting any contaminant on the slide rails for the
head assembly.

Avoid the urge to slather greese on things. It's almost certainly
unnecessary and can cause a host of problems. (Only relube the
head assembly slides if you have *actual evidence* of binding in
operation, which is quite rare.)

The drive belt does not need to be replaced unless it is quite
loose. Most are not rubber, so I doubt you will find a problem.

Rule to live by: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Speaking of plastic, is there any way to restore the plastic of a
Platinum IIe, because it clearly seems yellowed.

Good luck. The discoloration is not entirely on the surface,
and is caused by degradation of the dye in the plastic.

Best advice: learn to love its glowing patina... ;-)

Or as Antiques Roadshow would say, "It's a shame you cleaned
it, as uncleaned it would be worth $15,000. Cleaned, it is
worth only $125..." ;-)
