I'll second the vote for Slot 6 - that's where mine is!

I rarely use 5.25" disks so it's no great loss. And generally anything that 
needs 5.25" disks doesn't support/need 3.5" disks (old games, etc).

I also have a little utility written by someone else with the same setup 
which detects the control key being pressed at boot time. (I think it's the 
control key - it's been a while now and the GS isn't handy.) If pressed, it 
swaps Slot 6 to internal (the 5.25" drives), sets the speed to 1 MhZ (as is 
often required!) and boots slot 6. This pretty much covers 95% of my use of 
5.25% drives. The only time I need more is if I'm doing disk recovery for 
someone - fortunately a very rare need these days.
