The Apple II inherited its partition-table format from the Mac. The only
difference is that Apple II disk-partitioning utilities typically don't
create a driver partition; disks partitioned on a II won't be bootable on a
Mac, even if an HFS partition with all of the system files is on it.

Mac-style partition tables are supported in Linux. They should be enabled by
default on a PowerPC Linux distro, while you'll most likely need to enable
it separately (File systems -> Partition Types -> Advanced partition
selection -> Macintosh partition map support) for x86, AMD64, and other
architectures.
