if i had to guess.it might use a mfm hd like a seagate st series..with a
mfm/scsi controller
like a xebec s1410 ..like the sider/sasi's used to use...i'm just guessing
prob be smarter to just make a box for the cffa card...in some manner
the only think i know for sure if you are using a xebec s1410 mfm/scsi
controller board
like in the sider to run a mfm drive ..ie convert to sasi/scsi...and you
want to use a bare
mfm drive to (i think they are mfm drives) to replace your blown current
drive in the sider you
want to repair..you HAVE to use an IBM PC running a XEBEC HD controller card
(forget the model off hand
of the controller) to LOW LEVEL FORMAT the HD with said Xebec
card...otherwise
the sider format that comes with the sider hd will NOT recognize the bard
hd..it EXPECTS that
all hd's it sees of this variety were prev formated on a pc with said pc
xebec hd controller..at
least the 1st intial format of a completely bare/wiped replacement hd..i
gather that is how they
pop'ped them out from the factory before they pop'd them into the siders
these cards are common..and i have the format software for them...but
someone told me this trick
and i have not gotten around to trying it ..i have 2 siders i expect are
blown..but if i remember right
i'm fairly confident this will work...if i remember right the controller in
guestion was for the 10 and 20
mb versions..not sure about the later sider II versions....
anyway ....i prob should try to fix these hd's i do have the proper seagate
hd's yanked from some
old pc's..maybe i'll try that when i get that lantech network stuff (for
networking //e's and //gs's and siders etc)
as long as i will have everything hauled up and scattered anyway
of course the SMART sensible thing to do is simply yank out all the
internals of the sider/xebec/trustor/sider ii/chinook
or whatever and simply put in a SCSI hd with a port and use it with your
scsi card on your apple 2..it is faster a quick
fix...more stable...and you still retain the vintage look of your sider case
with like a 500 mb hd inside...
but for purists..there is the prev method to scsi mentioned for fun..
let me know if that guy ever got that chinook hack to work...i have a
chinook and an fx/20 i think that also could be
used with a //c ..but i think both are blown hd's also...and of course i
would need the chinook or fx/20 software to
see the //c drive etc etc etc
if you are interested in the lan-tech stuff (or know anything about it or
compulynx network) see my post under lan-tech
in this newsgroup on that project
(should prob just go the NanaNet route..it is prob easier/faster and i have
someone to whine to when i muck up something)
