Re: file transfer: Mac PowerBook <-> IIc+

I just wanted to thank everyone who contributed to this thread, and
share with you my progress.

I was able to transfer files just fine between the two machines, once I
understood the obstacle. As is often the case, you feel like kicking
yourself once you learn the situation. Fortunately, kicking yourself is
almost impossible when you actually try it, so I'm off the hook there.

The solution was to invoke ProTerm's "Answer" command (as was suggested
here), and then use "X1" in the modem string on the Mac/ZTerm side, to
disable dial tone detection (as was also suggested). I also had to fib
to ProTerm, telling it it was talking to a "Null Modem" instead of say a
"Generic Hayes compatible". That last step I found a bit peculiar, but
there it is. I couldn't get it work any other way, even though both
computers have proper modems. (And ProTerm has no "Global Village"
modem configuration, as it predates that product line.)

I also had to make sure that ProTerm's ZMomem "16 bit CRC" option was
turned on. In ZTerm there's no such option (that I've seen), and
apparently ZTerm was assuming this CRC algorithm while ProTerm wasn't,
during my first few transfer attempts. This resulted in spurious errors
that sabotaged the transfer. Turning this option on solved that problem.

So far I'm stuck with a transfer speed of 9600 bps, which I suppose is
adequate. I've tried throwing in the "N" modem command to let the
modems negotiate their best speed, and also tried forcing higher speeds,
but to no avail so far. Both machines always settle on 9600.

Anyway, that's the state of the art right now. I welcome further
comments, but in any case wanted to thank people for their solutions --
and even their rampant speculation.
