Re: Apple II version of Activision's H.E.R.O.

Settle down. I didn't say they should be only or exclusively DSK or NIB.

It's good to see there are people out there who still love to spout those
same good old, much used, narrow minded arguments though.

There are pros and cons to both sides of this argument.

. dsk/nib are strictly limited to floppy sizes. Max 140 kb.
. Shrinkit files can be much larger if required. Shrinkit files can be directly extracted to any disk media, real or software based as well as ProDOS directories.

. dsk/nib files can easily be used on current emulators but must be transferred to a II floppy disk via special software (ADT). . Shrinkit files can be transferred to II media via serial connection or various machine/media methods.

. dsk/nib files are simple disk images so file/directory info is not an issue . Shrinkit protects the file/directory info by storing it inside the archive. It can also open shk/sdk images which have lost their file type.

. Shrinkit has a nice User Interface which most people can easily adapt to.
. There is a Shrinkit version for II+ (48k), IIe (TUI) and GSOS (GUI) as well as utilities for other platforms.
. Shrinkit supplies some useful utilities, available in the TUI.

Well, my Apple ][c is dead now, and I dare say it wont be long before most
other people's Apple ][s start dying. So, what's the point of preserving
something outmoded and outdated like this. Even on a real Apple ][ SHK's
and SDK's are a pain to use.

Can you easily use dsk/nib disk images on a real II? Not until they are copied onto a real disk.

I expect my II's will last for some time depending on replacement parts. My 2c runs fine. Have you checked the power supply on yours? When mine failed years ago, it was simple a solder failure in the brick.
