    Apple IIgs can't be confused.  The fact is that Smartport 5.25 Disk II's 
ROM is built in motherboard with ROM 01 or ROM 03.  You can put original 
Disk II controller card like Apple II+'s into Apple IIgs' 6 slot.  Built-in 
Smartport 5.25 Disk II's ROM is disabled and original Disk II controller 
card's ROM is enabled.  It is done in the Control Panel by switching from 
"Disk Port" to "Your Card".
    Apple IIgs can still access original Disk II controller card.  If it has 
no disk, it automatically go to scan and detect Smart Port (Built-In 3.5" 
Disk II's ROM.  I expect that original software from Apple II should work 
Apple IIgs using original 5.25" Disk II controller card.
