WinXP has some minor out-of-the-box brokenness in that file extensions are
hidden by default. One of the first things I do to a new installation is as
follows:

1) Open an Explorer window (double-clicking My Computer will do).
2) Select "Folder Options..." from the Tools menu.
3) Click the View tab.
4) Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types."
5) Click OK.

(Under the General tab, I'd also recommend selecting "Use Windows classic
folders" and "Open each folder in its own window.")
