Its probably been tnef encoded.
This was done by older versions of outlook.
Its a similar concept to mime/uuencoding, though in a Microsoft native format.
If you have a Unix box handy, there are several tools that will unpack these .dat files.
One such is located at http://tnef.sourceforge.net (most linux distributions have precompiled packages of this one if you prefer).
Alternatively, try a google search for "tnef unpacker" there's bound to be one out there for windows somewhere.
