Except the 2716 F8 ROM hack--that's definitely home-grown.  ;-)
It is apparently just a not-very-clever way to substitute a 2716
(or is it a 2732?...) for the 2316.

There is certainly a lot of logic for a lower-case conversion!  Maybe
it also has "macro" keys, or multiple character sets.

Yet another possibility is an "adaptive" setup, for use by a handicapped
user.
