I'm not sure how that would be a firmware bug. Buffer overflows would
be an issue with the Finder, which as far as I know isn't flaky when
copying lots of files around.
It certainly wouldn't affect Copy ][+, which runs under P8, and can't be
buffering the full set of filenames in its limited memory.
Another experiment to try: use GS/ShrinkIt to create an archive on one
CFFA volume with the full contents of a drive partition. Turn off
compression to speed things up. Then, unpack it from one CFFA partition
to the other.
If that flakes out, try again with compression on to reduce the speed.
If that succeeds, it suggests that the problem occurs when too many I/O
operations happen in quick succession.
I'm mostly grasping at straws here...
