brad..
(confused about apple // networking...only heard about it never really

Brad, can you elaborate on what you mean " to do what we all dream it
could do " ?
Glenn
well..i don't know what i'm talking about here..but i'd like to see a
version of the tcp/ip protocols for the lance gs eithernet card..so you
could
have the apple ii not only go out with i think it is contiki and use the net
etc..but allow others to come into the apple ii from the internet and hit on
the
computer as well..as gbbs and metal/fv is configurable in script etc..then
there would be no need for this hardware or bbs gateway stuff to get
something like
metal/fv bbs to connect to the internet..even if it was limited by speed..if
my main pc worldgroup bbs or internet server could see the apple ii bbs on
the eithernet port in such a way that even at 19200 bps or some such...could
pass it thru ..then that would be much better then this serial connection
hodge podge that
does not seem to be as stable as we would like it to be..and the necessity
of using another computer get specifically get to the apple ii of the
internet...i think this is what terry o. and boycot is trying to do with the
hardware converter solution..now maybe i don't know what i'm talking about
(likely) but i think a person could revive a lot of this old apple // bbs's
and commodore bbs's etc if some game server site or bbs site..pc type
...could just toss the apple ii with the lance gs card on the eithernet hub
and even at limited speed and 1 user at a time..have it sit there and up and
accessable via there game site directly more/less thru the internet....with
metal/fv being freeware etc....not a problem to toss it up...whereas the
software solutions...on another machine...port hardware devices...serial
connections that hang and allow other users to pick up where a prev user
left off on the same account...etc etc etc..it would be worth the price of a
lance gs card to just get around all that also you could do odd little
things like revive futurenet (fv/metal network) and pass stuff thru inet
etc..
anyway my 2c worth...and i'm prob the person that least needs to do this
assuming i ever get my worldgroup bbs back up in that it has a addon called
dialout (there are also a couple bbs door programs that do the same if
someone wants to experiment) that at least allow me to seamlessly thur
worldgroup menus get to the tpro 4.2 RPG bbs on an apple //gs...without a
problem...and i assume if i ever get around to it doing the same for
fv/metal bbs like boycott via his bbs gateway program as well....but that
only would help worldgroup sysops with the dialout module....or maybe
running synchronet www.synchro.net bbs setup using a dialout door
program..that also would likely work..
i'd just prefer a dumb ..even slow...direct connection that all tcp/ip type
servers of today could just plain ass find the apple // on the eithernet
hub...and the particular connection from that main machine could then thru
common tweaks figure out how to get users there via www page or direct ip
back/forth in that manner..the same way that i get the worldgroup setup that
directly connects to the internet via pc to see/recognize the synchronet sub
game setup on another one of my ip's on my internal network..i can connect
the synchronet directly with the worldgroup system using some 8port octo
card etc etc..but it would take me 6 months to figure out how to tweak it...
now for all i know this is possible..and i don't program etc and am too
dense to know any better...but except for the tpro (null modem driver is too
stupid to know any better just sits and looks for a CR to hit and drops
clean at log off)...the fv/metal serial connection always hangs in other
peoples accnts etc etc..thus the boycott's attempted solutions with hardware
device and bbs gateway program...and the other guy who is using it with i
think a cisco server...almost there but not
quite..and a pain to setup..in my non-programming viewpoint ..at this time
however
anyway...maybe terry has it all working now...but that is my 2c worth and if
this is somehow do'able...let me know i'll ship you the version of fv/metal
i have on a scsi hd and/or the tpro 4.2f RPG BBS too boot...someone can see
if they can tweak this with a lance gs card to get around this using metal
script language etc (terry and a few others know this stuff)..and see if
crap can at whatever speed at least communicate in this manner and hopefully
even if no faster then a serial connection..do so as a guick easy hardware
fix....catch is buying the lance gs card...
but then again if it was easy it would have been done by now.....my
appologies to the lance gs people...but it would be how you would get 2
cards out of me in the future is this probably widely optimistic use of your
card where to work...for my somewhat screwy viewpoint on how to use it
but again if i had my act together i'd have a decent bandwith ip connection
to toss the system back up on ..so i should not even be tossing this
out...as far behind as i am on what i should be doing
anyway beat me up or enlighten me as always this is my 2c worth....
