I used to put on the paper labels printed and sharpied, but
although they wouldn't read properly as directories/files,
a global image reburned to an unlabeled CD-R would bring
tham back to life. That is why I asked if you tried that.


The first thing I tried with my DVDs is a full disk copy.

But when a track can't be read after hundreds of tries,
it doesn't matter much what kind of read is failing...

A consequent problem that I've seen a couple of times is
arc-shaped contact marks where the laser head has attempted
to refocus so much that its barrel has apparently come in
contact with the disk surface--kind of a new spin on "head
crash".  ;-(

Of course, in principle, any scratching damage to the "data"
side of a disk can always be repaired by polishing with the
appropriate materials, plus lots of elbow grease.
