They would have just swapped the ROMs from the old one to the new one
and depending on how old your ROM 0 board was, they may have had to
swap the VGC out for a new one as well.

When I did the ROM 0 to ROM 1 upgrade, I knew that only the ROM needed
to be swapped on my motherboard and I got my local Apple dealer to
order one in for me.  The day I took it in, they only had sales people
working and no tech guys so they let me go into the workshop and swap
it myself seeing as I was taking Electronics Technology in college at
the time.  :-)
