The Apple IIgs 3.5" drive is technically a DS/DD drive and would use
DS/DD 3.5" diskettes, commonly sold as 720k PC diskettes or 800k Apple
diskettes. They are available by special order from some companies or
on eBay.

However, standard 1.44mb diskettes seem to work for me without having
to do anything. In a PC, you can format a 1.44mb disk to 720k by
putting opaque tape over the non-write protect hole on the diskette
which is used by a capacity sensor on high capacity drives. Many
office supply stores still cary these disks.
