Actually, a square wave is what is written, and, if cassettes and
cassette decks had unlimited frequency response, is what would
be played back.

Since a good cassette deck (better than the portables usually
used with Apple II's) should have good response out to 10kHz
or better, it should deliver some approximation to square waves
with half-periods of 250 and 500 microseconds and rise and fall
times of about 35 microseconds.

Cheaper decks, with response rolling of fast after 5kHz, would
have rise and fall times in the 70 microsecond range, which
begins to look a lot less "square".  ;-)
