Re: Iigs comparable to Amiga? Pah!
I hate to say this a 'non-upgraded' standard Amiga 1200 configuration sucks. It
suffered the same fate as IIGS being the 'underdog' compared other 16-bits
except a PC XT [8088 8-bit] & AT [16-bit 80286] - Remember them? Ironically,
both crippled by a slow processor and insufficient built-in RAM.
While the original Amiga 1000 and 500 were more advanced and closer to IIGS than
the later models. The decidated chips (or DMAs) to handle 4-channel stereo
audio, graphics (blitter chip) and true multitasking that freed up the 7.14Mhz
processor (CPU) gives it the edge.
The main strength of Apple IIGS was the intregrated sound chip superior to even
the Amiga! And a great improvement graphically to Apple II range. With a
Macintosh-style interface (GUI known as System) in colour, it became known as
'unofficial' colour Mac before Apple introduced their first colour Macintosh
computer.
At the time of Amiga 1200 release it was little too late and PCs had already
superceded it. And Commodore went bankrupt soon afterwards and the rest is
history.
