Thanks for casting your eye over my pinouts, Michael - given the 
joystick is working fine on the internal I/O connector, and given my 
limited soldering skills, I'll go with me needing to resolder :) ::adds 
resolder joystick adaptor to Apple ][ ToDo list::

I was hoping to be able to use the joystick with my IIe LC card and 
externally on my //e - I'm also thinking of making a cable to 
externalise my europlus' I/O connector. I think these can be bought, but 
my budget's tight at the moment and there's not much of that sort of 
stuff out here in Oz.
