Need? No, but I bet you'll appreciate having one. It depends on what you're
going to do with your Plus. If you're a retro-purist, and only running
software from the era the machine was produced, 48K is fine. You'll need
that language card though for many DOS 3.3 era games, apps - and if you want
to boot early versions of ProDOS. Nothing to lose, everything to gain in
getting one.
